Secondary title: Guided active science learning in the fifth grade of elementary school
Secondary abstract: The main topic of this diploma work is guided active science learning (GASL) among fifth grade of primary school students. The theoretical part presents the cognitive theory and developing stages of the child’s cognitive development. It defines the concept of active learning and the advantages of collaborative learning. Process oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL) and guided active chemistry learning are presented in depth, as they are the base for guided active science learning. For better understanding of the second, empirical part of the diploma work, which is focused on the topic of heat and temperature, I used various research results about the students understanding of the concept of heat and temperature. To determine the effectiveness of guided active science learning and its appropriateness, I implemented a GALS learning module in two fifth grade classes. I compared the results of students knowledge before and after the implementation and analysed the given worksheets. For the analysis of the achieved knowledge I applied Wilcox test, which showed statistically significant difference. The students achievements process of science learning was determined by using observation sheets , and also important insights were proposed by the teacher in an interview. The final part of the diploma work presents the discussion between results obtained in this study and the results of previous research. I proposed some guidelines for improvement of guided active science learning and advice for quality production of appropriate guided active science learning documents.
