Secondary title: | Elastic properties of materials |
Secondary abstract: | In the diploma paper a simple press device is developed in order to demonstrate elastic properties of matter in the classroom in an interesting nonstandard way. Linear elasticity described by the Hooke’s law is usually introduced by an experiment, in which a spring or an elastic band is stretched by hanging weights. With the device developed in the diploma paper various objects can be compressed. Precise measurements of the contraction of the object and the force acting on the object can be measured simultaneously in order to demonstrate the validity of the Hooke’s law for compression. The performance of the device is verified by two examples. First, following the example of the experimental problem in the International Physics Olympiad in 2010 the deformation of the transparent foil rolled into a cylindrical shape is measured. As a second example the deformation of the polyurethane foam in a cuboid shape is measured. With suitable modifications of the level of difficulty the content of the diploma paper can be adjusted for use in primary or secondary school. |
