The thesis presents the child as a learner of a foreign language. I described the main viewpoints of behaviorism, nativism and cognitivism, also the theory of Piaget, Vygotsky, Bruner and Gardner , who with their findings made important contributions to the understanding of the child. The following section presents in detail the situation in Europe: the teaching of foreign languages at an early stage and later the situation in Slovenia and research in this field are described. The following chapters present the latest White Paper, reasons and advantages for foreign language teaching in pre-school and briefly summarized overview of contemporary models of teaching a foreign language.
In the empirical part of the thesis I focused on the results of a questionnaire survey, which was conducted among pre-school teachers of Slovenian kindergartens . It represents the views of teaching English in the preschool period of thirty-eight teachers, responding to various questions in connection with the teaching methodology, the materials that they use, the duration of the lesson, the number of children involved in the activity, etc. |
