magistrsko delo
Abstract

Stress in the public payments administration of the Republic of Slovenia |
Secondary abstract: |
For the writing of the master’s thesis entitled Stress in the Public Payments Administration of the Republic of Slovenia, we were encouraged by the fact that phones at work are constantly ringing, emails are piling up, and our boss gives us new assignments because of “our capabilities, speed and ingenuity.” Daily obligations and work assignments are increasing and therefore we don’t have enough time. And when we get home, there is still work like cooking, cleaning, parental duties, and taking care of grandparents waiting for us. In the end we discover that a day doesn’t have enough hours to do all the necessary things. Then we start to think which of these assignments we should leave out and what can we do faster to save our self just a little bit of free time; for a walk, massage or any similar relaxation.
In the last decade there has been much discussed about stress because we live in a time where the life pace is speeding up and we cannot find time for some moments for ourselves, for relaxation, for fun and for thinking. We meet new assignments, obligations, burdens and pressures daily and all of these cause stress. Competitive spirit in ourselves is shown in every field of life and is only worsening the situation.
Stress used to help us survive but nowadays it is only destroying our health. Stress appears in all fields of human life: at work, at home, in free time. Daily work assignments are increasing and that is why we are constantly in hurry and trying to adjust. Time flies by ever faster because we want to do more and more assignments in the available time. We want to do more things in less time because others do so or because we want to be better than the others.
The master’s thesis consists of two parts, the theoretical and the empirical part. In the first chapter of the theoretical part the history of stress is described. In the second part is described stress at work which has lately become a cold, inhospitable, demanding space because of the constant rushing and giving additional assignments. Technical development and development of information technology demands from us introduction of new technologies which is usually done without the appropriate adjustments or qualifications. Life rhythm and the way of life demand our full dedication. At work, productivity is most important. Our superiors are not interested in the problems of the individual and stress to which we are exposed. Stress at work can be caused by high demands and exposure to various stress factors such as conflict of values, insufficient rewards, individual work demands, role in the organization, organizational culture, career development and relationships in the organization. The extreme consequence of overburdening at work is burning away which can lead to death.
Stress is not always a bad thing. On the contrary, in minor quantities stress can be healthy. We have to realize that perceiving the causes for stress is the first and very important step to effectively control stress. It already helps if we can rise above the problem and look at it from a greater distance and we ask ourselves why we are really experiencing stress. Do we create stress unnecessarily? Are we pleased with our work? People are often setting themselves unreachable goals, too many goals at the same time or the deadlines that are too short. When the burden on the body and the soul is too big, first signs of burning away occur.
Since we can’t take stress out of our everyday life, we have to get familiar with it and get used to living with stress. We have to face it, control it, master it, tame it and use it in our advantage. Stress sensitiveness is specific to each individual and comes from the lack of capabilities to respond to a certain external challenge.
