Abstract

Due to the initiative of European Commission to reduce sugar price and admit sugar imports from least developed countries, European sugar industry seeks for new ideas on production technology, engineering and management. In order to approach competitiveness, safety and environmental impact of beet sugar processing, advanced engineering and management tools for optimising the efficiency of raw material use, utilisation of by-products and energy and water use need to be incorporated into practices of sugar factories. This paper reviews some of engineering and management tools for improving performance of sugar plants, which might be important for sustainability of European sugar industry.
