Abstract

Secondary title: FOLK MUSIC IN KINDERGARTEN
Secondary abstract: Folk music is a special and indivisible part of Slovenian musical creativity and its identity. It offers many opportunities and ways for kindergarten teachers to bring folk music closer to young children and to strengthen their awareness for preservation of folk heritage. The purpose of the theoretical part was to describe folk music in detail. The purpose of the empirical part was to determine to what extent kindergarten teachers use folk music in everyday educational process and their personal standpoint toward folk music. The empirical part represents the questionnaire answers from 66 kindergarten teachers in various kindergartens in Prekmurje. The results showed the majority of surveyed kindergarten teachers use folk music in their work, however they chose a middle value on a 5-point rating scale, which signifies they only use folk music occasionally. Kindergarten teachers believe kindergarten students are not familiar enough with folk music, but still like to sing and listen to folk music or even play folk instruments. The results have also indicated kindergarten teachers have a relatively positive attitude towards folk music and are aware of the meaning of its preservation and daily contact with folk music, although they prefer Slovenian art music over folk music.
