(diplomsko delo)

Abstract

Secondary title: POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION AND THE IMPORTANCE OF NURSING CARE
Secondary abstract: Postpartum depression is one of the most common complications in the post-natal period. It captures the whole person. It impacts the mood, feelings, thinking and person's behaviour. It affects on what person thinks of himself/herself and his/her life, how he/she feels and how he/she experiences the world around him/her. It also influences on some activities in life. Given the fact that it can leave consequences on women's health and health of their children, it certainly needs more attention by health professionals. Nurses are in fact those health experts that are obliged to know about the prevention, detection and treatment of psychological disorders during and after the pregnancy. The purpose of this thesis, which is of theoretical nature, is to present postpartum depression as a psychological disorder with its specific mental and physical changes, to highlight the most important problems in patient care where patients suffer from postpartum depression and also to emphasize the importance of nurses and explain the role of them when it comes to treating patients with postnatal depression. We found that the incidence of postpartum depression in mothers is high and that this disease needs to get more attention, especially in terms of prevention as well as when the illness already occurs. We found that the health professionals are overloaded with work, lack time and therefore can not in many cases offer what the patients would desire or what professional literature advises.
