diplomsko delo univerzitetnega študija
Abstract

Illicit drugs can be classified into four major groups: depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens, and cannabis. The first three consist of drugs that exist in a variety of versions- natural, semi-synthetic, as well as synthetic versions of drugs. In my thesis I also examine different stages of drug addiction.
In the following chapter we get to know the history of drugs from the very beginning, meanwhile not ignoring statistics on drugs. We examine the beginnings of drug abuse, the discovery of new, natural drugs and the first synthetization of drugs in a laboratory, that took place 1939. Exploring the history of drugs, we also focus on the development of consumption and popularity of different drugs, as well as drug trade, which is now operated by criminal organizations instead of legitimate organizations. Statistics show that marijuana, also knows as cannabis, is the most popular drug. During the last decades cocaine has also become a very popular drug, that many associate with a wealthy lifestyle. However, due to the current economic crisis and the trend of a healthy lifestyle, the use of cocaine is now decreasing. Synthetic substances, that can be marketed even on the internet, are becoming increasingly popular due to the fact that they are not classified as illegal. Manufacturers repeatedly produce new versions of such drugs with the same or similar effect, thereby avoiding prosecution. Because of this, the European Agency for Drugs developed the European early-warning system on new psychoactive substances. The system was used to notify 73 new substances in 2012. In Slovenia, latest data on drugs, gathered by the European Agency for Drugs, is obtained by the Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Slovenia, and is then provided to governmental and non-governmental organizations dealing with these issues. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the field of illicit drugs in the Republic of Slovenia. In order to do so I interviewed a police officer, an employee of the Association Stigma, and a drug addict currently undergoing the process of rehabilitation. This way the statistics in my thesis are upheld by real experience of people, that are very familiar with the issues I address and present them from their own perspective. |
