Abstract

S študijem domače in tuje strokovne literature smo zbrali podatke ter jih preučili, uredili, analizirali, sistematizirali in jih zapisali v računalniškem programu Microsoft Word.

Secondary title: The role of the family in the treatment of depression
Secondary abstract: Depression is an emotional disorder that is very common and affects an individual's behaviour, mood and thinking. The disease is manifested by negativity, less satisfaction; reduced energy and disinterestedness for the activities, which were previously pleasurable to an individual. The symptoms must be present for more than two weeks, in order to say that it is depression. It often occurs in females and affects millions of people all over the world, regardless of their social position. In the graduation thesis, which is of theoretical character, we present depression with significant physical and mental changes and the role of the family. The latter is the first to notice that changes in an individual. We describe depression through specific periods, treatment, prevention, recognition, the role of nurses, family and various forms of assistance that are available to an individual and his family in coping with depression. When writing we used the descriptive method of work. By studying Slovenian and foreign professional literature, we have gathered information and examined it, edit, analyse, systematise and record it in the computer program Microsoft Word. We used professional resources that we have gained with the help of scientific books, articles, magazines, and with the help of electronic resources, such as Cinahl and Cobiss. We used the basic literature for the period from 2004 to 2012, and the newer foreign and Web resources for the period from 2008 to 2012. We find that the family has an important role in the treatment of depression, as it is the first to notice that something is happening to an individual. Family must stand by an individual, support, promote, understand and help him find professional help and learn how to recognize the symptoms. They must have realistic expectations, a lot of patience and compassion while an individual is facing with the disease. The disease cannot be defeated easily. The role of nurses is also important, because at the beginning of the disease an individual’s family needs professional help, when dealing with feelings of guilt and helplessness. A variety of research notice that depression is increasing and that in the coming years it will be among the first to the most common diseases. For that reason it is important that individuals are informed about the disease and the methods of dealing with stress, since it is one of the risk factors for the occurrence of depression.
