(diplomsko delo)
Abstract

The nurse as mentor to students in clinical practice |
Secondary abstract: |
Theoretical background: A nurse as a mentor to nursing care students in clinical nursing practice has a very important role – she helps students transfer theoretical knowledge in a clinical practice. Both parties in a mentoring relationship, the mentor and the student, have to respect each other, understand each other and possess the necessary communication skills for the mentoring relationship to be successful.
Purpose: We wish to present mentoring, the role and importance of a mentor for students and to explore what kind of mentors students encounter in clinical practice.
Methodology of research: By studying the domestic and foreign literature and by using descriptive methods we introduced the concept of mentoring and described the role of nurses and nursing care students in the mentoring relationship and in clinical practice. The survey that was conducted at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor, was based on a quantitative methodology. A research sample consisted of 100 full-time students and 100 part-time students of nursing care, who have performed at least one clinical practice. With the survey questionnaire that consisted of 21 questions, we identified the activities and characteristics of mentors and students' satisfaction with them.
Results: The study revealed that students wish to be more involved in the work at the hospital ward, especially in the diagnostic therapeutic area. It also revealed that mentors do not devote enough time to students, mainly because of the overburdening with other work. However, the students are generally satisfied with the mentors in clinical practice. Because mentors do not devote enough time to students, the general opinion of students is that the nurses, performing the role of mentor, should be relieved from certain obligations. The study also showed that the mentors with less seniority have more understanding and devote more time to students.
Conclusion: In the future it is necessary to devote even more attention to the mentoring relationship and to mentors in clinical practice. There should be more lectures and research on this topic that would be satisfactory both for nurses who are mentors in clinical nursing practice as well as for nursing care students. |
