Graduation thesis titled The Maribor Ground Estates, City Hospital, and Religious Institutions in The Year 1754, represents a transliteration of official inventory from 1754 that was carried out at the request of Maria Theresa, in relation to the proposed tax reform. During the reign of Maria Theresa, State authorities wanted to gain a general overview of the population and data for reforms in the field of the military conscription system, so they began to determine the population size, its structure, and movement. The counting was carried out at the feudal estates and parishes. This graduation thesis contains six inventories: two for both ground estates, three for religious institutions, and one for the city hospital. Based of these inventories, I present the history of both Maribor ground estates, the Parish court and church, City hospital, and Franciscan Monastery until the mid-18th century. As their subjects we can find complete farmers, some three-quarter farmers, a half and a quarter farmers, cotters without farm land, farmers who were working in other people's vineyards, poor farmers, and tenant farmers. In some cases, their occupations are also given. With the help of these inventories, we get an interesting insight into the social structure of the population of that time. |
