diplomsko delo univerzitetnega študijskega programa
Abstract

DETERMINATION OF HEAVY METALS IN LEACHINGS WITH INDUCTIVELY COUPLED PLASMA AND MASS SPECTROSCOPY |
Secondary abstract: |
The goals of the thesis are to: determine the content of heavy metals in the leachates, evaluate the precision of the results, and include the results in the existing validation method. With the research, the waste water method, which is already introduced in Talum Institute waste water, can also be extended in leachates.
We analyzed metal content in the samples from Talum d.d. and Impol d.d. We analyzed slag and filter dust from the Talum foundry and filter dust from the Impol foundry.
Laboratory samples of filter dust from the Talum and Impol plants were prepared for analysis. We carried out the processes of leaching, filtration and separation. In the end, we measured all the material using the method of inductive coupled plasma and mass spectrometry (ICP - MS). The sample of slag from the Talum foundry was in the form of leachates, so we first did the separation with HNO3 or with HCL and then performed the measurements. We checked the repeatability of the leaching, separation and the ICP – MS measurements.
We checked if the measurements made after the separation of leachates for individual elements deviate from the measurements where the separation was not performed. We found that there were significant differences between the results taken from the samples of slag. The results were different with separation and without separation. We confirmed that the inductive coupled plasma and mass spectrometry (ICP - MS) method is precise and suitable for determining the levels of heavy metals in leachates, filter dust and slag. We, thus, concluded that this method is suitable for evaluating the content of waste-metal material. |
