Abstract

Narcissism - school system - self-reproduction of social classes |
Secondary abstract: |
If one asked what the survival of an individual depended on, the answer would be: society. If one also asked what the existence of society depended on, the answer would be: the individual. The existing co-dependence between an individual and the society is therefore very important. From the point of view of the individual, his every behaviour and action is determined by society. The society namely moulds an individual according to its own needs. Through socialization, the society tries to form people, who behave in the anticipated and requested way. One of the main factors of socialization, which has an important impact on the formation and consolidation of a specific social character, is the education system, which preserves and stimulates the ideology of a specific society in a given period. The education system represents the ideological apparatus of capitalism. Capitalism and post-modern societies are consumer societies, since consumerism represents the focal cultural practice. In order for consumerism to function, the society must provide for an adequate personality type and an adequate socialization type. The consumer society socialises individuals by turning them into consumers or pathological narcissists. Narcissism became the dominant psychosocial character of today's society, a collective occurrence that satisfies the needs of a consumer society. School and legislation encourage child-friendly education, which produces pathologic narcissists. This result is favourable and beneficial only for the society as it enables the unhindered functioning of modern consumer capitalism. The society not only harms children, but manages to convince parents that such action is beneficial for children. The education system in addition to producing forced consumers also assures the self-reproduction of classes. The school namely carries out selection in different ways and at the same time manages to convince people that the system is fair. It actually deepens class differences under the guise of equal opportunities. The education system most often refers to the provision of equal opportunities for all children in order to hide its actual intent. This means all children should have equal possibilities for success upon enrolling to school. This is not true, because a child's perception ability and his knowledge upon entering the school to a large extent depend on his social belonging or cultural capital. The education system also forms knowledge, which means that the curriculum is not neutral, objective and equally accessible. These contents are not part of a universal and unified science, but a collection of scientific discoveries and cultural traditions with elements of different ideologies. In addition to the official curriculum the school also has a hidden curriculum, which works to the benefit of the ruling ideology. |
