Abstract

Secondary abstract: The graduation thesis titled Communication with a Patient in a Multilingual Society is based on empirical research. The purpose of the research was to establish the situation in the area of communication in the medical environment. The main question of the graduation thesis was communication with the patients who do not speak Slovene. Furthermore, the aim of the graduation thesis was to determine the frequency of the foreigners visiting doctor on duty, existence of the officially translated form of written consent for certain procedures, and the awareness of the employees in the medical institutions on the patient's right to the interpreter. The aim of the thesis was also to determine the cooperation among the medical institutions and interpreters, covering the area of health, and the importance of knowledge of the languages in the medical environment. To this end, the empirical part of the graduation thesis was based on two research methods, namely descriptive and causal experimental method. It was established that the employees in the medical institutions and the patients with no knowledge of the Slovene language communicate with the help of the patient's relatives, colleagues, or they seek a common foreign language (English, German, and Croatian). The results showed that the doctor on duty is the most frequently visited by the Slovene-speaking patients not the foreigners. Furthermore, it was established that in the majority of the medical institutions there is no officially translated form of written consent for certain procedures. The results also established that the employees in the medical institutions are familiar with the patient's right to the official interpreter, but they do not work with the interpreters covering the medical area. Finally, it was established that only a few employees brush up on a foreign language or they learn one. However, we cannot conclude that the knowledge of a foreign language is not given a great importance since it is taken into account when recruiting new employees.
