Abstract

Secondary title: Pilot apparatus for pyrolysis of polyethylene
Secondary abstract: Today, the amount of waste artificial polymers is measured in millions of tonnes. This represents both a great environmental burden and a loss of a precious energy source. While it is possible and feasible to produce power from waste polymers directly, their chemical composition dictates the use of special equipment. With pyrolysis polymers may be transformed into products that can enable simpler exploitation. This thesis describes the construction of a pilot apparatus for pyrolysis of polyethylene and experimental tests of its energy efficiency. The apparatus is capable of processing solid polyethylene into a mixture of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons. The energy consumed in the process is lower than the energy which would be produced by the complete combustion of the products obtained.
