Abstract

Secondary abstract: Prison is a place for people that committed a criminal act for which a mandatory punishment is exclusion from their usual everyday enviromnent. Beside them there are various workers, which on a daily basis help them to realize that their acts were not according to the law and to prevent them from committing similar acts once they are returned into a normal society environment after a mandatory period of time. Those workers are for example social workers, educators, psychologists, healthcare workers and so on. In diploma thesis we will be interested in prison officers as workers. First of all it is important to have a general knowledge about their work. After that we can focus on their legitimacy and job satisfaction in an environment, where they spend the largest part of their day. Prison officers are obliged to act according to laws and regulations, mandatory for their profession. They have to adjust even when they think it is not right, because they are under a permanent control of the management. Therefore the workplace stress is very high. They constantly receive threats and verbal abuses from prisoners. It si of a highest importance that they have a strong tolerance for this things and even more that they with all their earnestness but also kindness, sense for helping prisoners and to communicate with them already at the beginning of their career establish a good working climate for prisoners as well as for co-workers. It is their duty to as much as possible suppress and overcome the violence outbreaks, which indirectly or directly affects them. Some of them think communication at a work place is of an outmost importance while the others wish for more organized trainings, where they could learn how to reckon with violent convicts or with other work related problems they are subdued to in prisons. To sum up, prison workers are not satisfied with their work and work place, although the majority of them think that without them, the prison officers, a prison system could not work. Furthermore they are convinced they are doing their job properly because without them prisoners would not manage.
