Abstract

Izbrana lokacija s primanjkljajem stavbne mase na ključnih gravitacijskih območjih, dobro prometno povezljivostjo in atraktivnostjo okolja predstavlja optimalne pogoje za zasnovo islamskega centra. Urbanistična in oblikovna zasnova novega objekta presega stereotipne predstave o islamskih verskih objektih in na sodoben način interpretira značilne islamske arhitekturne elemente. Strukturiranje stavbne mase nudi priložnost za razvoj inovativnega socialnega okolja, ki je ustrezno identiteti dane skupnosti in hkrati odraža značaj lokalnega prostora. Islamski verski in kulturni center je integriran v vizualno sliko mesta in s svojo prezenco pripomore k prostorski kvaliteti in programski pestrosti prostora.

Secondary title: ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL CENTRE IN MARIBOR
Secondary abstract: The master’s thesis proposes a conceptual solution for the design of an Islamic religious and cultural centre in Maribor. As it represents an assemblage of spiritual, social, cultural and educational activities of the community, it is an essential structure in the city. A comprehensive presentation of the theoretical foundations of the Islamic architecture sphere offers fundamental guidelines and a basis for its design. Our topic also deals with the development and the historical fundaments of the architectural typology of the Islamic religious buildings, from which discursive thinking, about the visual image of modern Islamic centres, and its interaction with the architectural environment, in primarily non-Muslim countries, is developed. A comparison of the existing examples from the macro-regional environment and the study of guidelines for the design of the Islamic religious centres serves as a basis for a successful integration of a new religious and cultural centre in the existing building structure in Maribor. Choosing the planning area was based on a broader analysis of the urban space. The chosen location, with its lack of building mass on some key gravitational areas, its good traffic connections and its attractive surroundings, offers the optimal conditions for developing an Islamic centre. The urbanistic and architectural design of this new building exceeds the stereotypical notions regarding Islamic religious buildings and it interprets the characteristic architectural elements of Islam in a contemporary manner. Structuring a building mass offers an opportunity for developing an innovative social environment that suits the identity of a specific community and simultaneously reflects the character of a local area. The Islamic religious and cultural centre is integrated into the visual image of the city and, with its presence, contributes to spatial quality and program diversity of an area.
