ǂThe ǂinfluence of land use on biodiversity of centipedes (Chilopoda) in the upper Kolpa valley (Slovenia) |
Secondary abstract: |
During our research the impact of land use on centipede community and biodiversity in the upper Kolpa valley was investigated. On five differently overgrown areas nearby Padovo pri Osilnici soil sampling with the squares method was performed and on two locations also the method of manual collecting of animals with tweezers was used. At the remaining locations from the Kolpa river to Goteniški Snežnik only the method of manual collecting was used. By using these two sampling methods 399 centipedes belonging to 41 species were found. In soil samples (squares method) 29 species were caught and with manual collecting 12 species were caught. The largest number of species belonged to Lithobiomorpha (23 species) group, followed by Geophilomorpha (16) and Scolopendromorpha (2) groups. The majority of these species has a European and palearcitc prevalence. Additionally also species with Illyrian, Alpine-Carpathian, Mediterranean and endemic prevalence area have been found. Based on the Rekonnen number the highest similarity between the centipede communities from overgrown meadow and forest-meadow (59.6%) was established. The average density of the centipede population of the soil samples was higher in forests (from 239 to 388 specimens/m2) as in grassland ecosystems (91 to 153 specimens/m2), while on the extensive lawn there were only 4 specimens/m2. The estimates for community diversity (H ') were between 1.6 and 2.2. A comparison of species structure from the investigated locations with other locations in Slovenia showed highest similarity with the frost hollows of the Dinaric karst and with the Iška, i.e. with refugia. It has been established that the centipede communities differ depending on the variations in land use and succession phase. For future research seasonal sampling and migration studies with guide’s traps are recommended. |
