Abstract

Secondary abstract: Our lives are largely spreading from physical environment to cyberspace and we can hardly imagine accomplishing even everyday tasks without it. With spending more and more hours of our lives on internet, we start to share our personal information, meeting new people over it and making many new opportunities for ourselves. Nevertheless, internet does not offer new opportunities just for us but also people who are trying to exploit it, so the need to be careful when using it is increasing fast. While grownups can be an easy target when we are not informed, children are in even greater danger because of their naivety. Therefore, it is vital we make the cyberspace as safe as we can and to make them well prepared for any unpleasant situations they may encounter. Thesis subject is grooming of children for sexual purposes. In theoretical part of thesis we therefore wrote about law that criminalize the act of grooming, the characteristics of crime and cyberspace, characteristics of children and circumstances that the perpetrators most frequently exploit and steps of their actions. About what can be done to prevent such acts and how and who investigate it when it does happen. In the empirical part, we presented findings on basis of results of the survey about knowledge parents have about this topic and their recommendations for future. Our findings show which devices children use to access internet, where they use it and how parents try to guard their children against potential online risk. Meanwhile we drew attention to the role parents, schools and social work centers play in ensuring the safety of children and the influence of media on perception of the offense.
