Abstract

Secondary title: "SVIT" PROGRAMME AND COLLON AT RECTUM CANCER
Secondary abstract: Colorectal cancer is an insidious disease, keeping grave symptoms, which are atypical and occur in other illnesses, hidden for a long time. Since this type of cancer causes high morbidity and mortality, the SVIT Programme began implementation in Slovenia in 2008 as a pilot phase - it is a national programme for the screening and early detection of precancerous changes and colorectal cancer, which will save the lives of many or alleviate their suffering. The first (theoretical) part of the diploma thesis presents colorectal cancer and the SVIT Programme. The second (empirical) part of the diploma paper applied a descriptive work method. In order to obtain the desired data, an anonymous questionnaire was used, which included 80 random passersby in the old town centre of Celje, in August 2011. The research wished to determine whether the respondents are familiar with the SVIT Programme and whether they respond to submitting material for examination. Also of interest was whether they are familiar with the symptoms and the risk factors for colorectal cancer and with the colonoscopy examination. The results of the research show that the respondents are not that well familiar with the SVIT Programme and that they responded to the invitation in more than half of the cases. The polled individuals are acquainted with the risk factors for the development of colorectal cancer. They also recognise the symptoms indicating a gastrointestinal disease, yet still hesitate too long before seeing a doctor. The most important examination in detecting colorectal cancer, after a positive laboratory test result for occult bleeding in the stool, is colonoscopy; its very preparation and course make it unpleasant, which is why it is somehow “feared” by the respondents.
