Abstract

V sodobni družbi se delež starejšega prebivalstva nezadržno povečuje, starostna struktura družb se spreminja, lepotni ideali postajajo vse pomembnejši in družba počasi, vendar vztrajno, izolira starostnike. Nastale družbene spremembe so pripomogle k spremenjenemu pomenu staranja ter starosti in posledično k odnosu raznih družbenih skupin do starejših in procesu staranja.

Secondary title: SOCIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF GERONTOPHOBIA (CASE STUDY IN THE DRAVA-MURA REGION)
Secondary abstract: The percentage of the elderly population is irrepressibly increasing in the modern society, the age structure of the society is undergoing a continuous change; the ideal of beauty is playing a more important role, and the society is slowly, but persistently isolating the elderly. The current social changes have altered the perception of ageing and oldness, and consequently influenced the views that different social groups had towards the elderly and the process of ageing. Most of our attention was thus dedicated to social factors that influence gerontophobia - the fear of ageing and the elderly - in the Drava-Mura region. In the theoretical part we discussed the theoretical framework pertaining to the field of research in question, focusing on the field of social gerontology as well as on the concept of ageing. We found it important to define crucial concepts and explicate social theories of ageing which, as it is going to be shown later in the text, can influence an individual's perception of ageing and his attitudes towards the elderly. We will provide a general presentation of the concept of gerontophobia - its meaning, features, and specificities. Our main focus will be shifted towards the sociological aspect, however, we did not overlook other aspects (psychological and biological), as they are indispensable to our field of research. We have conducted a research on how certain sociological factors influence the individual's fears and his or hers expectations regarding ageing and the elderly. Based on the empirical research and thus obtained information we - as hypothesized - came to the following fundamental conclusions: (1) the intensity of gerontophobia decreases when one gets better informed about the process of ageing, (2) the rate of gerontophobia is equally present in both sexes, (3), the youth aged between 19-29 is most inclined to be gerontophobic.
