Abstract

Secondary abstract: Police officers are allowed to use contact force in case of assault or when a person is resisting, while police officers are carrying out their tasks. One part of the thesis focuses on a detailed definition of contact force and a presentation of some of the techniques that are used by police officers to prevent an assault or to subdue a resisting person. Because police officers are faced with an increasing number of attacks on them and because of a shorter training program, it is neccesary to find solutions that will prepare police officers for situations in which they have to defend themselves against an attacker. In a self-defense situation the fight can quite quickly continue on the ground. To this end this thesis presents the usefulness of Brazilian jiu-jitsu in a realistic self-defense situation. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was created to effectively defend against an assault with an emphasis on ground fighting and clinch fighting. The thesis covers the development and history of Brazilian jiu-jitsu and describes the importance of sparring training for the effectiveness of this martial art in a realistic fight (self-defense situation). The sparring method of training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu creates a situation that brings us quite close to a realistic fight, which is why we can relatively quickly acquire relevant knowledge and the right feeling of knowing how to execute a technique on a resisting person. Therefore the inclusion of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, where sparring is very important, in police officer training programs would present an increase in knowledge and readiness of police officers for the unpredictable self-defense situations or use of contact force.
