diplomsko delo visokošolskega strokovnega študija Varnost in policijsko delo
Abstract

AGGRESSION, VIOLENCE AND MARTIAL ARTS |
Secondary abstract: |
In this diploma thesis, we researched whether the concepts of aggression and violence are linked to the full-contact martial arts like boxing and Thai boxing, which are in the world of fighting perceived as heavy martial sports.
In the theoretical part, we first introduced the concepts of aggression and violence. Further on, we connected these two notions with the martial arts mentioned above. Aggression and violence are mostly learned by imitation, so consequently people developed stereotypes that aggression and violence originate from boxing and Thai boxing. The purpose of boxing and Thai boxing is not to incite aggression and violence in people, but to strengthen the body and to learn how to self-control your punches and emotions, which is provided by qualified trainers.
In the empirical part, we analyzed questionnaires filled in by people, who attend training sessions of boxing and Thai boxing, and we also interviewed trainers and competitors in boxing and Thai boxing. The analysis has shown that people, who attend training of boxing and Thai boxing, are mostly non-aggressive persons, who do not favor violence in society. Interviewees also report that boxing and Thai boxing are individual sports, which require concentration, obedience and hard will, which, as agreed, are not virtues of violent and aggressive persons.
We conclude that, although there are some aggressive and violent individuals who participate in the field of boxing and Thai boxing, these are mostly exceptions. Boxing and Thai boxing also do not encourage people to aggression and violence, but on the contrary they contribute to the better control of body and mind. |
