Abstract

Secondary title: Sociological aspects of quality of life in old age and intergenerational cooperation in the Carinthia region
Secondary abstract: In the theoretical part of the MA thesis titled Sociological aspects of quality of life in old age and intergenerational cooperation in the Carinthia region we firstly establish the term age as the third and fourth age, which has to be taken into consideration beforehand in our youth and adulthood. We describe the effects of ageing and introduce the factors that decelerate the process. We especially focus on quality of life in old age, effects that retirement has on an individual and duties and opportunities for an individual when reaching old age. We also describe intergenerational cooperation and learning and how the contemporary society values elderly people. Our research includes elderly people that live at home and those that live in a nursing home, which is why we also focus on institutionalized safety of the elderly. In the empirical part we analytically compare the elderly based on their sex, age, education and type of residence (at home or in a nursing home). We focus on quality of health, family connections, quality of life in old age, loneliness, socializing with the younger generations, feelings of neglect, modern technology, prices of nursing homes and participation in different social clubs. The questionnaires were carried out in Carinthia region both in homes of the elderly and in nursing homes. The research shows that the elderly that live in nursing homes are more vulnerable, meaning that their health is worse and that they sometimes feel lonely. Participation in social clubs is mostly influenced by age, meaning that younger elderly are more likely to join such clubs, which was to be expected, because they are in better health. We also predicted that the elderly believe that the prices in nursing homes are too high.
