Abstract

Secondary title: Application of keratin from chicken feathers for the preparation of nano-fibers
Secondary abstract: Feathers, consisting of more than 90% keratin, are one of the poultry industries least used side products. The goal of this work was to analyse the possibility of electrospinning nanofibres from keratin extracted from discarded feathers. Pure keratin has an average molar mass of only 10kDa, which is at the lower limit for successful fibre production. To circumvent this issue different concentrations of polyethylene oxide (approx. 600kDa) were added to the keratin solution. The experiments showed that only solutions with at most 10% keratin are usable for nanofiber electrospinning. We also analysed the optimal settings for the electrospinning process, determining them to be a voltage of 15kV at an electrode separation of 10cm.
