Abstract

Secondary title: THE GENERAL PUBLIC OPINION ABOUT MENTALLY ILL OFFENDERS
Secondary abstract: Summary – The general public's opinion about mentally ill offenders All individuals are potencial victims of mental disorder and there are many different factors that can contribute to its emergence, such as genetics, family affairs, work, stressful life situations etc. The media often covers stories about criminals with mental disorder and often presents those people in a highly negative way, so we are left with a feeling these people are dangerous, weird individuals very different from us. That kind of media coverage often brings us to wrong conclusions about mental disorder and people who suffer from it. In every democratic state human rights and fundamental freedoms are considered top priority with a strong emphasis on equality. But researches show otherwise. People with mental disorders are getting employed on lower work positions and have lower salaries because of their decreased abilities. Offenders in criminal law that 'succesfully' plea insanity face a different sentence and psychiatry experts usually play a very big role in this evaluation. They are not guilty as charged, but need to be treated in a mental institution and can even be sectioned. There are examples when people with mental disorder commit criminal actions, but that is very unlikely. Very often those people choose to hurt themselves instead. Results of the questionary show that in Slovenia there is still a stigmatisation of people with mental disorder and most peopele (78 %) think they should be sectioned.
