Abstract

Secondary title: Peer violence and relationships in primary school
Secondary abstract: The master's thesis represents the problem of peer violence in the elementary schools in Pomurje and one of the elementary schools in Ljubljana. The main goal of this paper is to find out the frequency of aggressive behaviour among peers, the most frequent forms of peer violence, the interviewees attitude towards various forms of violence and to discover some potential solutions to improve the mutual relations amongst peers. The dissertation consists of a theoretical and an empirical part. The theoretical part includes definitions of terms, such as, aggression, different kinds and forms of violence and the causes for violent behaviour. Additionally it presents different roles which pupils may have in peer violence, defines the meaning of school and various factors that determine the violent behaviour of elementary school students. It describes different proposals that could help reduce and prevent peer violence in elementary schools. It analyses diverse theories of sex and age influence on violent behaviour. The crucial empirical part of this master's thesis are the analysis and the represented results of research, which included 165 elementary school students from four elementary schools in Pomurje and one in Ljubljana, in May 2015. The data was analysed with SPSS program for Windows. With this exploration we wanted to determine how often pupils in primary schools are exposed to peer violence and if the victims are more often boys or girls of different ages. The results of the research made among pupils of four various elementary school across Slovenia indicated that 44,3 per cent of pupils had already been victims of peer violence. Among those included in violent acts, boys are frequently involved in physical violence and girls in psychologically forms of violence. The results have also revealed that school playground and street are places where peer violence mostly occurs. The ones that pupils reveal their problems with violence in school are in most of the cases their parents. From the obtained information we can sum up that parents are still the ones, whom pupils trust the most. For an effective reduction of violent behaviour and timely intervention and helping victims of violent acts, we must achieve that primary school pupils trust school workers almost as much as they trust their parents.
