Abstract

Secondary title: Medieval knight tournament in Europe and in Slovenia
Secondary abstract: The thesis titled Medieval Knight Tournament in Europe and in Slovenia is based on the Tournament book of Gašper Lamberger, the Tournament book of René d'Anjou and historical literature, and it represents a detailed insight into the world of European and Slovenian knighthood and tournament participation. A knight, a heavily armed horseman, was part of a military elite formed alongside the higher nobility in the 11th century. In addition to his military role, a knight also strongly influenced the social and cultural aspects of the medieval world with his ideology, culture and ideals. The development of professional army and the growing power of the middle classes in the late Middle Ages reduced a knight's military power, so he started looking for new challenges in the political, economic and financial areas. Above all, a knight concentrated on restoring the chivalric culture. The tournament had a special place in a knight's life. From the 12th century onwards, a tournament brought together all elements of western chivalry: fighting, ideal views of sacrifice, service, love, faith and hope. During the Middle Ages, its original form of collective military exercises was transformed into a carefully directed royal ceremony of individual duels. Along with the form, the meaning of the tournament also changed, and played an important role in the life of a knight. This is evident in the tournament book the Tournament book of Gašper Lamberger and the Tournament book of René d'Anjou that enable a direct insight into the world of a knights' tournament and the research of the chivalric world.
