Abstract
Živimo v sodobni družbi velike potrošnje in posledično globalnega onesnaževanja našega planeta s prekomernim odlaganjem odpadkov.

THE COEXISTENCE OF POPULATION WITH WASTE IN GORENJA VAS - POLJANE |
Secondary abstract: |
We live in a modern society, in a society of great consumption which leads to global pollution of our planet with too much waste. We produce great amounts of waste and it is harder and harder to get rid of it without affecting the environment we live in. We need to be aware that the first step to prevent this impact on the environment is to separate waste intentionally and to treat recyclable waste economically.
In the municipality of Gorenja vas – Poljane people are well aware of that. It is a small rural municipality of about 7,500 inhabitants, mostly surrounded by hills and mountains. It consists of 6 local communities and 73 settlements covering 153 km2. Despite poor natural conditions of hilly rural area and sparse settlement, they have a systematically organised waste management and separation at source taken care by public service.
But even with great success, there is always room for improvement. Despite of making people aware of it, the amount of waste in the municipality of Gorenja vas – Poljane increases every year. In this diploma paper we want to get some feedback from the inhabitants about what they think about separating waste. Since there is a lack of research done on this subject, an idea to make an online survey about it came up. It includes 200 coincidentally chosen households and finds out some important information and confirms our two hypotheses.
We predicted that the people of Gorenja vas – Poljane municipality have enough information about separating waste correctly and are well acquainted with separating and collecting waste, with the »door to door« method of collecting waste collection, with separating waste at ecological collection sites and at Todraž Collection Centre.
We also predicted that making people aware with different activities has to be continued in the future in the municipality of Gorenja vas - Poljane.
The research showed that the level of environmental awareness is high since almost 95 % of households separate waste and only 5 % separate occasionally. The most important role in informing people about separating waste is played by the municipality of Gorenja vas – Poljane; 56,5 % of people asked are informed this way. A positive result is the fact that 86 % of respondents dispose biodegradable organic waste in composters at home and 12 % in bins provided for bio-waste. Almost two thirds of respondents (62,5 %) believe that children and youth in kindergartens and schools should be encouraged to treat the environment better and reduce and separate waste from early age on. The need for intense rising of ecological awareness in the municipality was expressed by 13 % of the respondents, the rest of them think that there is enough of raising awareness. All this speaks in favour of continuing and upgrading the activities for raising public awareness.
We can assume that with its inhabitants, the municipality of Gorenja vas – Poljane is one of the most forward-thinking municipalities in Slovenia, considering the problem of waste management and protection of the environment. |
