Abstract

Opisali bomo življenje Pocahontas: njen odnos z Johnom Smithom, krst in preimenovanje v Rebeco, poroko z Johnom Rolfom, rojstvo sina in odhod v Anglijo. V drugem delu diplomskega dela bomo zbrali najpomembnejša dela, v katerih je upodobljena Pocahontas in opisali, kako so jo različni umetniki upodabljali skozi čas. Opisali, razčlenili in analizirali bomo njene portrete, različne upodobitve reševanja John Smitha, njeno ugrabitev in krst.

Secondary title: REPRESENTATION OF POCAHONTAS IN VISUAL ART THROUGH TIME
Secondary abstract: In the diploma work we tackle a problem of representing Pocahontas in fine arts through the time. To understand her representation, we will also have to look over the Native American history, their culture, anthropological view on them and relations between British immigrants and Native Americans. We will describe the life of Pocahontas: her relationship with John Smith, the baptism and changing her name to Rebecca, her wedding to John Rolf, the birth of her son and the departure to England. In the second part of the diploma work we will gather the most important works in which Pocahontas was represented and we will describe how different artists represented her through the time. We will describe and analyse her portraits, different representations of rescuing John Smith, her kidnapping and the baptism. Pocahontas was represented many times, but we could not say for any of her representation that she was shown as a typical Native American girl. On all of her representations are missing tattoos, which were characteristic of those Native American girls, whose tribes have the British met. In the most of the pictures Pocahontas is represented more as a European woman and not as a Native American. It is obvious that through the time different authors imagined Pocahontas more or less as a European woman.
