diplomsko delo
Abstract

Secondary title: |
Temporal and spatial variability of mandibular size and shape in European Water Vole, Arvicola terrestris (Linnaeus, 1758) |
Secondary abstract: |
Theme of this thesis was the morphometric analysis of the variability of the European Water Vole's, Arvicola terrestris (Linnaeus, 1758), left mandible from 8 geographic regions. All specimens on which the further analysis was applied, have been provided by prof. dr. Boris Kryštufek, from various museum collections. In the purpose of the intraspecific determination of morphological variability (variations in size and shape of the mandible) and the secondary sexual dimorphism (SSD), the method of geometric morphometrics was used. A total number of 13 landmarks was determined on each of the analysed mandibles and based on this placement uni- and multivariate analyses have been applied, wherein size and shape analysis took place separately. With the one-way analysis of variance ANOVA or. F-test the assumption was confirmed, that intraspecific secondary sexual dimorphism does not occur. Discriminant analysis has shown an expressed geographic variation in the size and shape of the mandible. According to our expectations, cluster analysis has revealed the formation of a central and two outlying groups, according to the the geographic distances between the various regions of sampling. Temporal analysis has shown the formation of three clearly identifiable size groups of the mandible. We observed the reduction of the overall size of the mandible and in the same time span differences in the form of the mandible have occurred. Highly overlapping polygons however indicate that these changes are relatively small. |
