Abstract

Social responsibility as a non-technological innovation in online-shops in Slovenia |
Secondary abstract: |
Companies, due to requirements posed by the environment, not only consider the economic aspects of business but also environmental and social ones.
Consumers and the environment itself demand socially responsible business reminding companies of the role they play in the environment. Organizations are expected to have a "code of conduct" or set of ethical policies in place which serve as aids to guide employees, partners and suppliers in safe, legal and fair business practices. Companies are expected to produce environmentally friendly products based on modern technology, techniques and materials, which reduce the negative impacts of production on the environment and to be actively involved in local communities with the support of various organizations, societies thereby contributing to the development of an important part of the environment in which they operate. Different business trends and market changes force companies to adapt and innovate their business practices. Economic operators consider companies as a part of the environment, where they can contribute to both the improved lifestyle of the individual (person) as well as the material well-being of society which is more difficult to achieve without social responsibility.
Corporate social responsibility is becoming an ever-increasing important topic, even in the harsh operating conditions of today as evidenced by the economic crisis in 2008. Most companies have been forced into lowering operating costs to a minimum hence affecting the funds alloted for socially responsible behavior.
In this work, we paid particular attention to socially responsible business practices of the on-line store industry in Slovenia. We wanted to know whether on-line stores in Slovenia are familiar with social responsibility, or simply presume to be so. Also of interest was whether such behavior resulted in extra costs for these companies and how they viewed the impact of environmental consciousness on their business.
According to the results of our study Slovenian online stores consider that socially responsible behavior takes into consideration employees satisfaction, business practices and ethical conduct. Nearly half of respondents believe that they act socially responsible. Based on our research, Slovenian online stores support socially responsible behavior with particular involvement in humanitarian causes, but it is obvious that there is unfortunately a lack of media support in such matters. (also by the companies themselves).
Companies believe that socially responsible behavior has a positive impact on business as well as in the manner in which business can be successfully conducted in the next five years successfully and that the promotion of innovative social responsibility can contribute to the sustainable development of the company. |
