magistrsko delo

Abstract

Secondary title: GENDER DIFFERENCES IN VALUE ORIENTATIONS OF SCHOOL CHILDREN
Secondary abstract: The times we live in demand a great change in people's morals and values. Values, undoubtedly, play a very important role in every society and the lives of its members as individuals. They are considered as the guidelines of life. Values represent important opinions about what is appropriate and desired, and form a part of the culture that guides the lives of its members. The purpose of this master's thesis was threefold: firstly, to find out to what extent, if at all, gender influences children's evaluation of the importance of value orientations; secondly, to determine which values are evaluated more highly by girls and boys; and finally to identify the key factors which influence the formation of any gender-differentiated value orientations. Of twenty values assessed, the researched showed that boys evaluated fun, competition, money, sport, beauty, good food and peers more highly than girls. Conversely, girls evaluated free time, friendship, happiness, love, knowledge, tidiness, health, family, truth, honesty and school success more highly. Unexpectedly, the research showed that the older the children were, the less importance they assigned to knowledge, school success, tidiness, free time, beauty, nature and peers. The study found that the processes of primary and secondary socialization are the defining factor for differences of individual values between boys and girls. Furthermore, the research showed that between the ages 12 and 15 gender-differentiated values are mostly influenced by the process of education and peers. In conclusion, the formation and relative importance of children's values appears to be gender-dependent, primarily as a result of external influences during childhood.
