Abstract

Secondary title: Park areas in selected Slovenian towns
Secondary abstract: There is an increasing need to experience and to be in touch with nature therefore, park areas play a crucial role in the quality of the living environment. This thesis discusses park areas in selected Slovenian towns and compares them among themselves by using urban geography, where we focus on morphology of these areas and their social function. Park areas were divided into four categories: town park, castle park, memorial park and recreational park (urban forest) by using predetermined indicators as our main analytical tool. To give a more representative picture of the presence and allocation of morphological elements we drew a thematic map. Comparison of parks is shown through tables and comments. We have found that the majority of parks were created in the bourgeoisie period, in the brink of the 20th century and in the 60ies, when most of the apartment buildings were built. The contents and the character of these parks have been changing throughout history. In the bourgeoisie period parks were mostly used as a social contacts area. In the 21st century, a new trend of recreational parks and urban forests arises, and contemporary elements, that meet the needs of modern times, are being incorporated in existing parks as well.
