Abstract

Secondary abstract: Jožef Klekl Sr. was a priest of extraordinary importance. For almost four decades, he was an editor of Marijin list and Kalendar Srca Jezušovoga, but his most important contribution was his work with with the newspaper Novine. His efforts were based on his concern over his native tongue. He is known to have been defending it in times of the most intensive Magyarization. He put his emphasis on the importance of the link between school and church. According to his opinion, the only true language to be taught in school, besides Latin, should be Slovene. By introducing Gaj's Latin alphabet, he started to build the bridge between the Prekmurian language and its Slovenian counterpart. The bridge between the two languages was built slowly and gradually, but with a great deal of perserverance and courage. His newspaper Novine contributed to the strengthening of the national awareness, thus having an important impact on the people of Prekmurje, who, after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, became part of the central Slovenian territory. Klekl's most important aim was that, by the texts published in his newspaper Novine, which were for the most part written by himself, the readership would get educated and their religious and cultural awareness would be raised. The last edition of Novine was published in 1941 and the interesting fact is that until 1972 no printed periodicals of catholic content existed in Prekmurje.
