Abstract

Uvod: Pogoji dela v operacijski dvorani so zelo specifični, zato mora imeti operacijska medicinska sestra poleg strokovnega znanja tudi dobre psihofizične sposobnosti.

Secondary title: THE PHYSICAL LOAD OF SURGICAL NURSES
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Working conditions in an operating room are very specific therefore the surgical nurses must not only have an appropriate technical expertise but must also have good psychophysical abilities. The work of the surgical nurse involves standing, specific postures, heavy lifting of patients and can span over a number of daily working hours. The aim of this research was to investigate if a physical load of surgical nurses leads to their health problems and to propose solutions that could increase their work satisfaction and reduce the risk for development of health problems. Methodology: This study used a quantitative research approach which involved 50 surgical nurses working in a surgical department at the Clinic for Surgery UKC Maribor. Statistical data analysis involved descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation test, t-test, χ2 and ANOVA. Results: Participating surgical nurses most frequently suffered from back pains, pains in their arms and in their shoulders. Participants believed that these pains were a consequence of their work. More than half of them required a medical treatment to address these problems at least once in their life. According to participants, several factors can reduce the chance of developing muscular-skeleton system related illnesses. These are: maintaining a healthy body mass, use of appropriate equipment and aids for lifting patients, and work conditions which foster ergonomic safety. Conclusion: Appropriate equipment and working aids can reduce physical load of surgical nurses. Thus, these aids and equipment should be made available in operating rooms. Continuing education of surgical nurses, appropriate work instructions and work monitoring also play a significant role in the reduction of surgical nurses’ physical load. These factors taken together can contribute to healthier and safer working environment of surgical nurses.
