Abstract

Secondary title: THE SUCCESSS RATE OF CHILDREN IN SCHOOL IN RELATION TO LANGUAGE SOCIALIZATION IN EARLY CHILDHOOD WITH THEEMPHASIS ON BILINGUALISM
Secondary abstract: The aim of this diploma thesis, entitled The success rate of children in school in relation to linguistic socialization in early childhood, with an emphasis on bilingualism, was to demonstrate the relation between the linguistic socialisation of children and their success in school, as well as to display weather the different bilingual structure reflects in children's academic performance. In the theoretical part we have, for this reason, presented the school as an educational institution, we have specified the linguistic determinism, this being speech, language and language code and their relation with social class and success in school. Furthermore, we have presented the bilingual education in the area of Pomurje. In the empirical part we have shown the results from our research which was carried out at the Bilingual Elementary School Lendava I. The study included students of the 5th and 8th grade at the. In the school year 2014/2015 all 89 pupils participated in the study. We used a questionnaire that consisted of: questions witch we used to assess the socio-economic status of the questioned pupils; questions with which we measured success in school; questions with which we measured personal involvement in the bilingual model of language usage and finally we used a short written task to determine the pupils' language skills. All four factors (socio-economic status, academic achievements, bilingualism and language competences) were analysed in the empirical part where we determined the correlation between certain variables. We discovered a link between the socio-cultural environment and language competences, as well as a link between linguistic competences and performance in school. We were unable to demonstrate a link between the predominant use of the Hungarian language and the performance in school in relation to bilingualism. However, we verified and showed a statistically significant correlation between bilingualism and language competences. The results showed that pupils who predominately use Hungarian language in their home environment have lower level of linguistic competences in the Slovenian language.
