Abstract

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂtranslation of modal particles in Slovene subtitles of the movie "Die Welle"
Secondary abstract: The subject of the thesis are German modal particles and their translation in subtitles. The translation opts for the reduction and omission of elements without informative value due to technical constrains, therefore, the diploma paper introduces different aspects that help to understand the importance of translating German modal particles into Slovene. The theoretical part describes the main characteristics of subtitling and the theory of particles as a word class as well as their classification in German and Slovene linguistics. The empirical part focuses on the analysis of the German movie The Wave with the goal to determine the meaning and function of German modal particles in the original text and how they were translated into Slovene. The aim was to discover, which Slovene particles were used in the Slovene subtitles as equivalents of the German modal particles and if their omission influenced the reception of the translation in comparison with the original text. We can conclude that the Slovene language has particles with a similar meaning and function like the German modal particles and that their omission in the subtitles can influence the understanding of the plot and the relationships between the characters in comparison with the original.
