Abstract

Secondary title: Progressive education - a mosaic of progresive ideas that changed the course of education
Secondary abstract: Education has been changing within time according to political, economic and social changes. Along with differencies in curriculum and teaching methods the position of teacher and pupils significantely changed. At the turn of the century a movement based on Pestalozzi and Rousseau's child centered ideas occured an changed the views on education in roots. In the United States John Dewey became the central figure of the movement known as progressive education. The main ideas of the movement are opposition to traditional education. Due to different interpretations, the progressive pedagogy, in Slovenia known as reform pedagogy, remains the subject of discussions and criticism especially by the so called traditionalists who claim that the consequences of modern education is lack of core knowledge in pupils.
