diplomsko delo visokošolskega strokovnega študija Varnost in policijsko delo
Abstract

MEDIA INFLUENCE ON FEAR OF CRIME |
Secondary abstract: |
Violence in very often shown in mass media, because it is a topic that is very popular among watchers, readers or listeners, and thus offers the media houses easy way of earning money. Main object of the case study before you, is to introduce the literature and already made research, on the subject of mass media influence on fear of crime. In the document, we will try to confirm or reject three hypotheses. The first one is stating that the media increases fear of crime. The second hypothesis indicates that people are more afraid of the serious, violent offenses, which are less likely to occur and are less widespread. The hypothesis number three is saying that women are more afraid of victimization than men are. In the case study, we researched literature already written on the subject of media influence on people, and on the subject of fear of violence. To confirm the hypotheses, we conducted a study, which included 20 people that we interviewed in two different age groups – ten people per group. We defined the groups, based on previously reviewed literature, and decided to pick people, that were based on the authors’ opinions the most afraid of crime. Those were women at the age from 19 to 25, and from 54 to 80 years old. After finishing interviews and examining data, we came to the conclusion that confirmed all three hypotheses. |
