Abstract

Secondary title: Comprehension of Idioms in Primary School Puipls: Third, Fifth and Ninth Grade Pupils' Comprehension of Animal Idioms
Secondary abstract: Complex field of linguistics is divided into many genres. It is not easy to understand idioms fully, since there are many factors that influence the comprehension of these unique and demanding phrases or fixed expressions. The children are not equipped with experience and do not have sufficient knowledge to fully grasp the meaning of an idiom, so they usually take it literally. Therefore, the Slovenian language lessons should make an emphasis on this. Master's thesis examines the phraseological units' comprehension in primary school pupils. We compare third, fifth and ninth grade pupils. Moreover, the thesis compares the comprehension with respect to the type of phraseological units, age and gender, so the sample involves four girls and four boys from each grade. The mere inspection of teaching materials and Slovene curriculum shows us the poor representation of phraseology in primary school. Consequently, our assumption that the knowledge of idioms is bad proved to be correct. The research shows, depending on the type of phrases, that students are most familiar with idioms that are not proverbs. The conclusion that the research brought was not at all surprising, since we have expected that the understanding of individual phraseological units in the higher grades would be better than in the lower. However, boys had a slightly better understanding of idioms than girls did. We believe that there should be a bigger emphasis on phraseology and on figurative meaning. The Slovenian language lessons should include more exercises and not only illustrative examples intended to deal with other themes.
