Abstract

Secondary title: Genre patterns in novels by Vladimir P. Štefanec
Secondary abstract: The diploma thesis Genre Patterns in Novels by Vladimir P. Štefanec deals with the analysis of genre patterns in the author's six novels: Morje novih obal, Spre-hajalec z nočnih ulic, Viktor Jelen, sanjač, Republika jutranje rose, Odličen dan za atentat and 66, 3 m2. Our understanding of the concept of the literary genre is that it consists of literary works that have certain common or their own charac-teristics. A genre pattern, on the other hand, is a solid frame or a scheme that defines a specific genre. We used the definition of a novel saying syncretism is a novel's only constant. In this diploma thesis all the attention was paid to genre syncretism which interweaves and connects different novel genres within one novel text. We started from dichotomous division of literature, on elite and trivi-al, and from connections to postmodernism, which equalized the status of high and trivial literature, and the hypothesis that a contemporary Slovenian novel is a modified traditional novel, inspired by the traditional novel. Its structure is modified by different post/modern transformations, genre syncretism being the most obvious one. The research confirmed our hypothesis that the author is combining several different genre patterns within each of his novels, viz.: a clas-sic detective novel, a crime novel/criminal novel from the victim's perspective, a crime novel/criminal novel from the perpetrator's perspective, a crime novel combining a criminal novel from the victim's perspective and a crime novel from the perpetrator's perspective, fantastic literature and science fiction, a novel about an artist, a psychological novel, a historical novel, a war novel, a philo-sophical novel and a family novel. Moreover, he uses some of the genre patterns consistently and others not. The only hypothesis we proved to be wrong was that the author uses the genre of a crime novel in all his novels, because it turned out that it is not present in the novel Republika jutranje rose.
