Abstract

Human personality is one of the most fascinating and widely studied fields of psychoanalysis in modern society. At the same time, its mysteries are, despite much research and analysis, still difficult to explain, as the human personality is a combination of innate and new-found characteristics of an individual, and as such, subject to deviations from established psychological models. Archetypes, which we inherit from our ancestors, are a part of the collective unconscious (unconscious psychological processes) and represent an integral part of human personality. Studies have identified and defined several types of archetypes, with different levels of development and means of passing between them. This Master's thesis discusses one of the most established and traditional archetypal figures, the Warrior archetype, and uses various scientific studies and findings to show its influence on literary characters in different literary periods, with the focus being on the characters in the novel Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden. The Warrior archetype is considered as one of the most intense and proactive in general; therefore, it is not surprising that people who relate to it are those who take initiative, take risks and actualise their goals or the goals of society. Various types of soldiers who apply their archetypal characteristics in combat situations are associated with the Warrior archetype. However, the Warrior archetype is not confined to traditional battlefields alone, as its influence can be traced in other, less lethal human social interactions and relations. These interactions, which are present throughout history, can be found in literary works, by which they gain a universal communicativeness and the possibility of being studied by future generations.
