magistrsko delo
Abstract

Production of hydrogen using surpluses of electric energy |
Secondary abstract: |
In our modern world life, people use some kind of fuel every day, whether in cars for transportation, in furnaces for heating or in power plants for electric power generation. The most commonly used fuels are hydrocarbons (gasoline, oil, natural gas) because of their accessibility, but on the other hand they are also great environment pollutants. There is a great tendency towards the use of renewable energy sources and search for cleaner alternative fuels; one of these is hydrogen, which produces only water and heat during combustion. Also solutions reguarding energy storage in any form are being developed. Pumped-storage plants are systems, which successfully store energy in form of potential energy of water. The company Dravske elektrarne Maribor d.o.o. are planing to build a new pumped-storage plant Kozjak for several years, but because of many hesitations and lack of finance construction cannot be done. In this dissertation, a system for hydrogen production with water electrolysis and re-generation of electric energy is discussed. This system could serve as alternative option to mentioned pumped-storage plant. At the beginning of dissertation, current state in terms of world energy consumption is described, followed by description of hydrogen production methods with emphasis on water electrolysis and description of fuel cell and pumped-storage plant operation. A basic calculation of concieved system with investment eligibility is made at the end of dissertation. |
