Abstract

Secondary title: LACTOSE INTOLERANCE
Secondary abstract: Theoretical basis and purpose: Lactose intolerance or disorder of milk sugar digestion is a condition, characterised by deficiency or complete lack of the lactase enzyme. The disorder is not curable. Many symptoms of the disorder are known. Lactose intolerance is becoming increasingly well known, but people still postpone diagnosing the disease for too long. The purpose of this diploma thesis is to describe the characteristics of lactose intolerance and to investigate knowledge on lactose intolerance in students of nursing. Research methods: Quantitative research method was used. We gathered data through a survey, comprised of 15 questions. 150 surveys were handed-out, 115 returned. So, 115 students of nursing participated in the study in June 2016. Results: Results show that students know what lactose intolerance is, they know its causes, symptoms, and treatment. They are also aware of labels on food products that inform about appropriate usage for people with lactose intolerance, and which food products contain milk sugar and must be avoided by people with lactose intolerance. But most students are not aware of the significance of lactose free diet and the difference between lactose intolerance and cow milk allergy. Conclusion: A person with lactose intolerance has different symptoms, e.g. stomach pain, bloating and cramps, flatulence, diarrhea, nausea and others. Living with the disorder can be difficult, especially if not taken seriously. People are becoming more aware of the disorder, but still postpone diagnostic assessment.
