Abstract

Kakovost in varnost predstavljata sestavni in pomemben del našega vsakdanjega dela.

Secondary title: THE ROLE OF EDUCATION IN EXPOSURE TO HARMFUL RADIATION SOURCES IN THE WORKPLACE
Secondary abstract: Quality and safety are two important components of our daily work. Due to developments in medical technology leading to new work procedures, employees need to continually improve their knowledge and skills. Nevertheless, employees’ competencies regarding their own safety and exposure to adverse effects in the workplace are being questioned. The theoretical part of the thesis consists of the description of adverse effects in the workplace, i.e. ionizing radiation, brachytherapy, anesthetic gases, surgical smoke produced by electrosurgery, interventions with chemotherapy, chemicals, microbiological hazards and stress. Most of the knowledge transfer about adverse effects in the workplace happens between employees and organization. Therefore, various types of learning, i.e. learning from work experience, learning in the frame of organization, learning organization and organizational learning are being presented in the theoretical part. The main part of the thesis is the research work. The research was conducted using data from questionnaire, designed specifically for the purpose of this thesis and distributed among employees in the surgical ward of the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana. In the frame of this research, six hypotheses were presented. A program for statistical analysis SPPS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) was used to help us either accept or reject each of the hypotheses. The findings show that employees possess insufficient level of knowledge of adverse effects in their workplace. Moreover, they wish to acquire new knowledge of the topic. According to the employees, they would feel better in their workplace if communication with their superiors improved when new procedures having adverse effects on them are being implemented. At the same time, additional learning programs on the topic would improve the atmosphere of the workplace.
