Abstract

Secondary title: THE LEGAL POSITION OF WOMEN IN GREEK ANTIQUITY
Secondary abstract: My diploma work deals with the theme of the legal status women had in ancient Greece. I first did research into specific periods of greek history, briefly describing each of them. I then directed my chief interest in prevailing ideology as well as the status women had in those days. I was most interested to find out what their outlooks were like, in their family relationships, their creeds and beliefs, whether they were entitled to own any possessions of their own, their political and economic status, and also their entertainment and leisure if there was any. The principal part of my diploma work is then focused on the status of women in Athens and those in Sparta. What follows is a short comparison of the status women in these most outstanding city states had. I will endeavor to reconstruct all the period lasting through all life, from birth to death. In ancient Greece women’s life was strictly limited to their homes, they were constantly being followed by their husbands, fathers, brothers, they were fully controlled by males. Seldom were women allowed to participate in politics, let alone inherit any property, they were granted only scarce sums of money. Girls were expected to marry very young to considerably older men always chosen by their fathers.
