Abstract

Secondary title: Handling waste medicines
Secondary abstract: The number of new diseases is constantly growing and consequently, so is the trend of appearance of new medicines on the market. The larger number of medicines in circulation, the larger possibility of generation of waste medicines, which means additional burden to the environment. In 2010 the Government of the Republic of Slovenia passed the Act on handling of waste medicines that defines the rules and conditions of collecting and disposal of waste medicines. For this reason, there was prepared a plan of systematic collection of waste medicines in our largest hospital in Slovenia, The Ljubljana University Medical Centre (Ljubljana UMC). In 2012, the first containers for collection of waste medicines were placed, and in 2014 they were replaced with disposable containers. In the subject thesis, we wanted to determine how effectively the system of collecting of waste medicines was conceived. For that purpose, we performed surveys among medical staff to find out how well the employees are informed in the area of safe handling of medicines.
