Biblical imagery in the lyrics of Nick Cave

Abstract

Nick Cave is a singer, lyricist, poet and writer. His way of writing is very singular and therefore very compelling. In my diploma I presented the reasons for his unique approach to writing lyrics. His way of expressing himself has been influenced by his life experience. Personal tragedies, love affairs, and his relationship with God. His lyrics are full of biblical imagery. In the first part I presented his views and explanations for his songwriting. In the second part I looked for the themes presented in his lyrics. His spiritual journey took him from Anglican religion to Christianity and beyond. His intense study of the Old Testament influenced his behaviour and his songwriting in his early years. Him turning to New Testament boosted his imagination to the next level. His once brutal and violent lyrics got some soul over the years. Still he claims that his songs are not religious as he rejects institutionalised Catholic church. He uses images from the Bible as metaphors to express himself, which gives his songs deeper meaning.

Secondary abstract:	Nick Cave je pevec, poet in pisatelj. Njegov način pisanja je edinstven in zato še posebej zanimiv. V svoji diplomski nalogi sem predstavila razloge za njegov poseben pristop do pisanja pesmi. Na njegov način izražanja so vplivale njegove življenjske izkušnje. Osebne tragedije, ljubezenske afere in odnos do Boga. Njegova besedila so polna bibličnih podob. V prvem delu naloge sem predstavila njegovo razlago in poglede na svoj način pisanja. V drugem delu sem te teme poiskala v njegovih pesmih. Njegovo duhovno potovanje ga je popeljalo od anglikanske vere do krščanstva in čez. Prebiranje Svetega pisma Stare zaveze je vplivalo na njegovo obnašanje in pisanje pesmi v mlajših letih. Nova zaveza je dala njegovi domišljiji nov zagon. Njegova nekdaj brutalna in nasilna besedila so prešla na bolj duhovno raven. Nick Cave trdi, da njegova besedila nimajo religiozne vsebine saj zavrača katoliško cerkev kot inštitucijo. Za svoje izražanje uporablja podobe iz Biblije kot metafore, kar daje njegovim besedilom globlji pomen.
