magistrsko delo
Abstract
Magistrsko delo obravnava posameznike v obdobju zgodnje odraslosti.

ǂThe ǂrelation of parenting styles to personality dimensions and self-esteem of individuals in early adulthood |
Secondary abstract: |
The styles parents use in upbringing their children are connected to different areas of the child's life and functioning; the effects of parenting are shown not only in childhood, but also later in life. This Master's thesis deals with individuals in their early adulthood. The primary purpose of the research is to establish the connection between parenting styles, personality dimensions and the self-esteem of participants in their early adulthood. Our objective was to establish whether parenting styles significantly predict the self-esteem and personality dimensions of individuals in their early adulthood. Three questionnaires were used in the research: Parental Authority Questionnaire, the "Big Five Inventory" for measuring personality structure, and the Self-Esteem Scale. Research participants were individuals aged from 22 to 45, of which 57 were males and 71 were females. Some demographic data was also obtained. The results have shown a positive connection between the democratic and permissive parenting style and the self-esteem of young adults; whereas a negative connection between the authoritarian parenting style and self-esteem was shown. The democratic parenting style predicts a higher expression of personality traits of extraversion, openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness in children, while the authoritarian parenting style is connected to neuroticism. The permissive parenting style has a positive connection to extraversion, openness, and agreeableness and is at the same time negatively linked to conscientiousness. Despite the connections, the parenting styles were not established as important predictors of research participants' self-esteem and personality dimensions; therefore, further studies would be needed. |
